BEGIN WITH THE EVIDENCE

Ancient Egyptian Mummified Animals Still Have Stories to Tell

What can we learn when we look without taking them apart?

Ancient Egyptian mummified animals preserve evidence both inside and outside their wrappings. Museum objects, inscriptions, physical examination, X-rays, and CT imaging allow researchers to investigate what was wrapped, how it was prepared, and what may have happened to the animal. By looking across different kinds of evidence, we can begin to separate what we can observe from what we can interpret—and recognize what still remains unknown.

"Before we look beneath the wrappings, we begin with what can be seen."
