02 — THE MYSTERY BEGINS
Ancient Egyptian afterlife: Why Did Its Scariest Creatures Protect the Dead?
The Gates of the Ancient Egyptian afterlife
More than 3,000 years ago, an Egyptian priest named Hori was buried with a remarkable papyrus. Across its surface were mysterious figures guarding the passageways of the afterlife. Some had animal heads. Some carried knives.
According to the beliefs preserved in Hori's Book of the Dead, the journey through the ancient Egyptian afterlife required more than courage. The deceased needed special knowledge, including the names and passwords associated with the guardians, to pass through the gates.
But why would a journey toward eternal life be guarded by creatures that looked so frightening? Were they enemies of the dead, protectors of sacred places, or something more complicated?
What were they protecting — and from whom?
